Summary: From the hackneyed advice that owners should be “alpha in their pack,” to the emphasis on leadership, to the ubiquity of “Nothing in Life is Free” (NILIF) protocols, the concept of hierarchy is integral to many trainers. Though this framework can sometimes lead to helpful training procedures, the explanations often go beyond a straight-forward scientific perspective by integrating superfluous concepts such as rank and deprivation. This presentation will offer an alternative framework which provides a more equitable approach to effective training.

Expanded Description:
Plenty in Life is Free: An Alternative to Rank-based Training Models
Much modern dog training has evolved from older methods laden with physical coercion. Though the dog-training profession has made enormous strides in improving methodology over the past two decades, remnants of that dominance-based paradigm are still common. From the hackneyed advice that owners should be “alpha in their pack,” to the emphasis on leadership, to the ubiquity of “Nothing in Life is Free” (NILIF) protocols, the concept of hierarchy is integral to many trainers. Though this framework can sometimes lead to helpful training procedures, the explanations often go beyond a straight-forward scientific perspective by integrating superfluous concepts such as rank and deprivation. This presentation will offer an alternative framework which provides a more equitable approach to effective training.

| Kathy, great as always, August 6, 2012 |
| Reviewer: Nick Hof, CPDT-KA |
This is a really interesting talk by Kathy. She speaks about how we have come light years beyond the need to physically dominate our dogs, but we still hold onto some sacred lessons from that mind set. Although there are many forms of the 'Nothing in Life is Free' programs, the overall idea that our love and attention needs to be conditional on the behavior of our dogs in unnecessary. She gives the example of wanting to compliment someone but having to wait until they perform a good behavior in order to do so.
I gathered that she has found this over-used and often as a plan to fix behavior issues that it really has no bearing on, which doesn't help anyone and can make matters worse if it is a very extreme version of NiLiF, such as shunning to strengthen the effectiveness of attention.
Kathy talks about a few different topics such as pack theory (and how it relates to NiLiF) and old truths that we old dear. I believe her overall message is that we need to continue to move away from the idea of being the absolute master of our dogs, and to focus more on just having a healthy relationship with them where we act as more of a translator for our dog.
I would like to note that this is not Kathy saying that we need to stop asking our dogs to do what we say and giving them their hearts every desire when they bat their eye-lashes. But to instead realize that we can have a relationship with our dogs that moves beyond a constant tally of you get this only if I get this first.
