Change for the good, that is
Many dogs are overly excitable, reactive, nervous, or stressed. These aren't bad dogs, but those kinds of behaviors can make living with your pet more difficult than need be. While there is no “good dog switch”, understanding how dogs learn, using positive reinforcement methods, creative training exercises and good management techniques can make for dramatic changes for the good in your dog.

Author Dee Ganley has developed dozens of training exercises based on many years of experience working with problem dogs. Completing the exercises that apply to your dog’s particular behavior problem can lead to extraordinary results as owners and dogs change, learn, and grow together.

Learn how to:
• Use positive reinforcement strategies to teach new, acceptable behaviors that will replace unacceptable ones.
• Manage the environment around your dog to minimize the chances of difficult behavior.
• Find and execute the training exercises that will help you solve problem behaviors.

What dog trainers are saying about Dee Ganley’s Changing People Changing Dogs:

Dee’s book is clearly written and provides systematic advice that any pet owner can follow. At the same time, it is comprehensive and deep enough to be an extremely valuable resource for the professional trainer and consultant.
Jim Barry, author of Ethical Dog Trainer and Positive Gun Dogs

The goldmine of this book is the section on training exercises in the appendix. Ganley, refreshingly practical in her approach, explains to handlers exactly what to do with their hands, their eyes, and their voice and how to deliver rewards in order to achieve success.
Barbara Shumannfang, author of Happy Kids, Happy Dogs: Building a Friendship Right from the Start

Dee Ganley is a skilled dog trainer, handler and instructor, with 30 years experience. Dee provides lectures and workshops to trainers and veterinarians in North America and Europe. Dee lives in New Hampshire with her husband, daughter and three dogs.

What reviewers are saying...

"A good third of the book is an appendix giving step by step, detailed and clearly explained instructions for numerous exercises. Two of the self-control exercises that I use with clients almost daily are the Settle: Relaxed Down on Lead, and the "Find It Game". - Carolyn Clark, M. A. Director of Centre for Applied Canine Behavior This book covers a lot of ground, with sections on training equipment, toys and chews for environmental enrichment and play, canine communication, how dogs learn, how to evaluate and assess a dog for training and behavior work and chase out the details of what owners might report and a few case studies.

changing people changing dogs, February 2, 2011
Reviewer: Donna Savoie
I am a Professional Dog Trainer and a pet dog owner. I thoroughly enjoyed Dee's book. It is well written and amazingly easy to read especially considering how packed full of information. It's a book that you can't put down whether you are a trainer or a pet dog owner looking for training advice. Or maybe you just like to read?! The exercises are great, easy to execute and very detailed in thier description. You will want to incorporate them into your daily routine with your dog as fun and games. You'll have a thinking dog after you read this book and apply the new knowledge that will be imparted to you. You'll be showing off to your friends in no time!

Are you a professional trainer? If you are, this book is a must to incorporate into your routine and curriculums, your clients will love you for it! - Donna Savoie, Pack of Paws Dog Training Charlton MA

Solid Information in a Solid Format, October 31, 2008
Reviewer: Dianne McCorry, CPDT
I love this book. It is a treasure of information for new and seasoned trainers alike and while written for dealing with difficult dogs, the information is useful for all dog training levels. It should be on the CPDT “must have” study list with its clear terminology and well-organized layout. Reference seekers will love that it even has an index that is lacking in so many books! Best of all, Dee Ganley brings the solid science of training into an easy-to-read, easy-to-understand format. This book covers it all from management to behavior modification with precise instructions and even diagrams, but never loses sight of the owner-dog relationship about which she says, “You will come away changed forever, for one soul cannot touch another without leaving its mark.” This book is a staple on my “go to” list.

Overflowing with Practical Training Tips, September 29, 2008
Reviewer: Barbara Shumannfang, CPDT
Changing People, Changing Dogs is like an encyclopedia of Dee Ganley’s dog training advice. It offers at least 50 training games to help solve doggie problems, guides you step-by-step through your progress, and teaches you how to troubleshoot as you go along in your training. Ganley uses her years of experience to emphasize important habits for any trainer to get into before, during, and after training. She is able to share the skills that separate excellent training from run-of-the-mill training because she has the uncommon ability to convey both the science behind learning as well as practical, hands-on dog training advice. Whether your challenge is changing problem behavior or adding to your own training toolbox, Ganley’s book is one you’ll return to again and again.
