What’s Covered in Positively Powerful Heeling?

One of the most difficult yet most rewarding behaviors to teach is heeling.  Heeling takes us through all our obedience levels and a strong heeling foundation is very important. However I find that understanding how to teach heeling is something that is lacking in many handler’s training program.    When I give seminars one of the most requested topics is heeling.  And I find that people really do struggle with it as they do not have clear direction on how to teach it.  When I watch novice handlers in the ring, often their dogs are not enjoying heeling and this concerns me as heeling should be something that they do enjoy, and it is a stepping stone to a future in obedience.   I have always shared my training tips with others as I want to see the sport grow, many handlers do not have any local instruction and need help.  I decided to reach out and provide video packages just on heeling and how to teach it.  I have  included a video section on heeling games so you can add some spice and fun into your training sooner than later!

The Armband Heeling Method  – 51.8 minutes

  • Pot Work  & Rear In Foundations – 15.58 minutes – I felt it was important to include some basic foundation skills that will help you to achieve your heeling goals.   In these exercises I am emphasizing rear end awareness and how to help your dog keep his rear in.  One of the common problems in heeling is the dog that “crabs” which is heeling with the rear end out, this equals points off in the ring.  Left turns are also difficult for many dogs and results in the handler turning left and the dog bumps into you by not picking up on your cue.  This foundation work will help a lot with these issues, and it is also a fun exercise for your dog to learn.
  • Armband Talk, No Dog – 19:22 minutes – I will take you through the armband method steps one by one.  I explain each step thoroughly and provide important information on things you should and should not be doing.  Without having a dog present it allows me to focus in on many important points so you can understand how the method works in it’s entirety.
  • Armband Demo with Dog – 17 minutes –  After you have watched my armband talk without a dog you have a good understanding of the steps you will take.  Adding in a dog now gives you a visual demonstration of the method and different things to watch for & do when your dog is present.

The Push Heeling  Method – 73 minutes

This method I taught to Sparks as a puppy.  It is similar to what many European and IPO handlers teach, although I have made some changes to suit my sport of choice which is AKC/CKC Competition obedience.  I wanted to try this method as it allows me to have more hands on contact when teaching, it is also a way to teach more collection and active heeling if you follow through using all the tools I provide in this video series.  It can be a bit more difficult for a novice trainer to teach, but if your dog does not connect with the armband method this is a great alternative.  This is not a method that I would use with small dogs.

  • Push Heeling Introduction – 5 minutes
  • Pot Work & Rear In Foundations – 15.58 minutes – see above
  • Push Heeling Method - 20:32 minutes
  • The Heeling Helpers – 16 minutes – These are tools that I show and demonstrate how to use.  These will help to create more collection in the dog’s rear and help to provide some front end lift for a more active and engaged heeling dog.
  • Hand on Outside of Head – 16 minutes -You will see dogs that are trained in IPO competing and their handler’s hand is on the outside of the head when they are heeling.  I wish we could do the same in our sport, but we can’t and the challenge is when we put our hand at our waist, dogs tend to want to come forward.  The skill of teaching your dog to have your hand on the outside of their head is very valuable throughout their career to help maintain proper heel position.  In this section I show you how to teach it and where you can place your reinforcement to provide your dog with a focal point for times when your hand is on the outside OR at your waist.

I suggest you watch all the video’s in package two before you actually start teaching it, so you can clearly see the progression of what you will be teaching, and there are pieces of each section you can start teaching early on.

SMALL DOG HEELING -44 minutes

  • Pot Work & Rear In Foundations – 15.58 minutes – see above
  • Small Dog Heeling – 28 minutes

YES!  You need to teach your small dog heeling focal points too!

This video will show you how to start off your small dog heeling from the very beginning.  I actually do the initial teaching demonstrations with my Golden Sparks because the initial focal point is the same.  However as the focal point starts to change and becomes more fixed, you will see video’s of small dogs demonstrating this procedure.    I show heeling techniques for toy dogs, and small dogs ranging in size up to medium sized dogs such as a Cocker Spaniel and give you ideas for those dogs that are even a bit larger such as a Springer or Cattle dog type size.

HEELING GAMES – 31 minutes

I demonstrate numerous heeling games that you can play with your dog. Not so much drills but rather techniques of how to play the games and why they are beneficial in your training. Heeling can become very mundane for your dog (and you!) if you don’t spice it up with some fun. You can use these games in your everyday training until they become habit and then add in at least one heeling game per training session. These games can be used on all sizes of dogs from small to large.
