In book one of the ground breaking three part series, Border Collies- A Breed Apart, highly respected author Carol Price explored the origins and nature of the Border Collie. In this second volume, she focuses on the training process. She explores the training challenges that typically face Border Collie owners, explaining why these occur and how by tailoring a training program better suited to the individual mind of the Collie, we can successfully work through them. Price shares what she believes to be the all- important exercises and lessons that Collies must learn, putting considerable emphasis on essential life skills, something she believes can often be overlooked or ignored, and is paramount to creating a happy, well-adjusted dog that will excel in training.

Described by head of the Border Collie Trust, Ben Wilkes as “A series that could change your understanding of Border Collies forever.”, this book will increase your knowledge of this special breed, helping you get the most out of your relationship.

I am a novice Border Collie owner. I found this book to be extremely informative and well written. I was a bit put off by the price, but it is well worth it.

A good read. I will get the other 2 books in the series.

okay, but (like book 1) I expected more

Well, compared to the previous book in this series (Border Collies: Essential Life Skills and Learning) this one at least did not contain so many bits that made me go "what?? no!!" And for someone very new to border collies, or who is having trouble getting along with the BC that they have, it IS probably a pretty useful book. That said, honestly I think its contributions can be summed up as 1) "hey, try thinking of them as being kind of autistic, that might make you more sympathetic to their issues", 2) "use the things they're obsessive about, e.g toys and other moving objects, as rewards for training the behaviors you want, don't just mindlessly throw balls or whatever to simply tire them out"; and 3) "a lot of people get distracted by the high trainability of the breed and don't place equal or higher priority on ensuring you give them good skills for coping with the social/environmental challenges they will face in life - so you should do that more!" Which is all good advice but not necessarily novel nor rocket science, especially compared to the price of the book.

    Border Collies - A Breed Apart - Book 2

This book is an excellent resource for starting any breed - not just border collies. The life skills sections and early training are very well laid-out. The parts of the book dealing specifically with border collies really hits the mark with the way border collies learn and their idiosyncrasies/problems/intelligence that affect our living and working with a border collie. I can hardly wait until Book 3 becomes available.
